I don't use the trains often however thought the other savings in day outs may be worthwhile, what do you think?

I think it helps if you buy it just before an occasion (or several) when you know it will be very useful to use.

Typically I find it will pay for itself on a 4-5 hour roundtrip journey for the whole family.

If you aren't in the habit of using the trains often now, is that really likely to change? Whatever reasons you don't use the train now, aren't they likely to still apply? When you consider the real running costs of motoring (wear and tear costs) they tend to be about 30p/mile. Maybe use that for comparison.
