Travel in London black cab with two three year olds

Hoping someone can help me... we live in North London, but I'm planning a day out in central London with our three year old twins. At one point, we'd like to take them in a black cab. Do they need car seats, or can we hold them on our laps? Does anyone know what the rules are for children of this age? Thanks in advance!

3 year olds can wear the adult restraint in the back of a taxi if no child restraint is available (or nothing at all if there are no adult restraints - unlikely).

Actually - sorry a typo or at least a rewording after I deleted a bit of my post (is there any way of editing previous posts?).

Not CAN wear but MUST wear...

hi dh is a London cabbie- you don't have to have car seats/boosters although in dh's cab there is a fold out booster seat in the middle which we use for dd1 2.5.

That's really helpful of you both - thanks so much for replying!
