We are here for 10 days with dc (11,8) and would love ideas for fun things to do off the standard tourist track. Thanks. (Already done Exploratorium, bike riding, hiking, and trip to Alcatraz booked - looking for something a bit different.)

Go and visit Muir Woods. Huge fantastic trees, well worth a visit. If you are carless you can take a tour, it's not far away.

Really like the Modern Art Museum. And Chinatown. And if you have time, drive down to San Jose and go to the Winchester Mystery House. Palo Alto is nice for a drive too. I found a fantastic coffee place there which serves latte in bowls near Stanford uni which I found very exciting.

If you have a car and are happy to take a trip out, then head south towards Ano Nuevo state park - they have huge sand dunes and elephant seals. You get a great view from the viewing points - take binoculars though.

Also, how about a trip to an all American baseball game - we went to Oakland Athletic - you can get there on the BART I think. It's really set up for families and everyone just sits together (doesn't matter which team you support) and eats hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, etc. It's a great atmosphere. (helps if you understand the game, which I did by the end!)

Oh yes, we enjoyed baseball too, although they are long matches!

A long, long time ago a wonderful semi-celeb chef used to do eating tours of Chinatown. She was called Shirley Wong Torres. Brill!
