We have done it several times, got a recommendation at hotel reception of a local firm and walked round there so that we could see cars and check prices. Very cheap, very casual, no problems whatsoever. A guy told us that they are very laid back because you cannot steal a car on Majorca, no where to hide it and no way to get it off the island without being caught.

Do you have the name of the place?

We were in Cala d'or, in May, 3 years ago. It was warm and lovely, although we did have the most spectacular thunder storm ever! We did not hire a car there but instead went for several boat trips up and down the coast. You should look for recommendations on Trip Advisor who cover car hire as well as restaurants and hotels.

We've used one of the big names at the airport, avis or rentacar ?

Anyway they are much of a muchness.

Dont be surprised if you get a really beat up sctatched thing. The Majorcans are not particularly careful with their cars and often 'bump' cars out of the way !!!

We spent ages noting all the scratches and dents before we took possesion at the airport, but the hire firm barely glanced at them. We could have played dodgems in a car park for all they seemed to care !

Thanks everyone. Vanrell look good so think we will try them first.

Thanks for this thread it has been useful to me too. I've just booked a weeks car hire with Vanrell after reading it. Peggotty can I just ask you what the arrangements were for returning your car? On our booking e-mail it says to park the car in a certain row at the airport, put the keys in the boot and leave it there locked and someone will collect it at some point. Just a bit concerned that as there's no actual handover the company could allege anything was wrong/ damaged later?

SOrry kingprawn have only just seen your question so will answer in case you're still around! Yes it was the same arrangement when we dropped ours off. There were no problems with it though and we didn't hear anything. I think they are quite reputable. The only thing I would say is that they told us a rep would be waiting for us at our arrival gate holding a company sign up for us the identifiy them by and when we got there they were nowhere to be seen, cue us getting increasingly hysterical looking for them. Eventually found the rep outside the building having a fag!! So if they are nowhere to be seen when you arrive take a look outside!

Thanks Peggotty! That puts my mind at rest.
