Cycle carriers in France

Just bought a rear cycle carrier for our trip to France next week. After reading about French laws it seems they are quite keen if the spokes on the bikes cover the lights.to fine if they think it is unsafe (a strap on one). Just wondering if anyone has taken bikes to France and/or had any problems with the Police? Thanks

I think it is also illegal in the UK, though many people here use bike carriers that cover the rear lights and number plate. We bought a board with number plate & electric connections/lights and secured this over the bikes whenever we used our carrier in the UK so people could see when we were braking, turning right/left.

There was a story in one of the newspapers last summer that police in the west country (Devon Cornwall? can't remember) were stopping cars at the "border" and issuing on the spot fines to cars with bikes over number plate/lights. It is illegal here as well and apparently the police do fine.
