Using my mobile abroad

I am not much of a traveller - hardly ever go abroad, but we are off to France this Easter for a few days. I know my mobile can be used abroad, but not sure if I need to know anything else. I have sorted out the tarrif side of things. Do i need a pin number; will it automatically search for service or do i need to tell it what service to use?

Help! (Not very interested in technology, hence I am clueless).

My phone is a Sony Ericsson C510 and I am with Vodafone.

Thanks in advance

The phone should seek the service itself. Worth bearing in mind that Vodafone have roaming partners - Sfr being the French one I believe, so you will get better rates if connect to that. You should be able to search manually somewhere in the phone settings if it automatically connects to a different provider.

www.moneysavingexpert.com has good information on mobile roaming when abroad and I would suggest you read this first.

You need to use due care and use the mobile sparingly; it can cost you dear to receive as well as send calls.

Thanks for the tips - that's really helpful.

Hopefully I won't really need to use my phone, but it's good to know, just in case.
