can anyone recommend good places to go around this area for small children? My two are 5 and 1 and three quarters.

Oh I love Aldeburgh, so peaceful

Never done it with children, but places nearby - Great Yarmouth for beach, sealife centre, fair that kind of thing. There's 'playworld ocean adventure' at stowmarket. The beach at Aldeburgh is stony, but further up the coast (southwold, great yarmouth, lowestoft) it gets sandier.

Kids love the mini boating lake at Aldeburgh (you can buy wooden boats in the local shops for about £7 or take your own!) plus the boating lake at Thorpe Ness (rowing boats for hire plus different islands on the mere to investigate - it's fab on a sunny day, loads of swans and ducks to follow too!) There's a really good (but expensive) farm park to visit too going towards Ipswich but can't remember the name - you'll see leaflets for it everywhere. The castle at Orford is fun too and there's a nice sandy beach at Southwold. Don't miss the fish and chip shop or the old-fashioned tea shop on the high street. Have fun!
