the photo doesn't matter but you should check whether it is ok to travel to Ireland with less than 6 mths left on the passport

Agree the photo doesn't matter - ds travelled at the age of 4 with a photo of himself aged 6 weeks without any difficulty!

My dd used her passport until she was nearly 5 and she had her photo taken when she was 2 weeks old. Don't worry, it will be fine.

Photo is irrelevent. It is the date of expiry of the passport that matters and whether a particular country allows you to go right up to the wire with the date. My 5y olds expires in April and we went to Switzerland and France a couple of weeks back with no problem, he is about 9 weeks old in his photo. I phoned up to check the rules and it is only really Africa, Asia and maybe US where you have to be careful - they may require X months of validity on the passport when you travel. For Europe though (including Switzerland) the only requirement is that the passport has to be valid until the last day of your trip when you leave so you should be fine in Ireland.

I just got passports for all three children last month.

In the leaflet enclosed, it said the passport's actually only valid for 4.5 years, you have to have 6 months left on it for travel!

A passport is valid until date it expires

However, different countries have different admission rules - for some you have to have minimum 6 months validity (USA certainly), others up to day it expires.

Check with the Irish embassy website.

I think you can renew them from the time 6 months before expiry though.

JackSpratt · 25/03/2010 19:22

I think you are ok but read carefully as I've only skimmed

fabhead · 25/03/2010 19:24

You definitely dont have to have 6 months left anymore for Europe - rules have been relaxed. I checked a few weeks ago.

mrstimlovejoy · 25/03/2010 19:24

thanks all think i'll give the passport office a call tomorrow just to double check
