Has anybody been to Taba in Egypt?

We're off to Taba in 7 weeks and I know thats a very quiet resort with not much to do - does anybody know just how quiet it is? I.e. is there shops etc. there?

I'm also thinking about taking Traveller's Cheques but may need a bank to cash these in - does 1 exist in Taba?

TIA

Hi there... I've been to Taba twice, and really enjoyed it (was happy that it was quiet though, suited me!). We stayed at the Hyatt Regency, and there was a bank there. Bank of Egypt or something. Am sure you could cash travellers cheques there.

There were shops, a whole little tourist village, in Taba Heights, plus a little gift shop in the hotel itself. To be honest, I wasn't very interested in shopping, so didn't really look around.

Each of the resort hotels have their own bars and restaurants, so there is plenty to do if you want to go somewhere different every night (unless you have signed up to an all inclusive deal). Where are you staying?

Hi orangina

We are staying at Sol Y Mar Sea Star which seems to be a bit further out than most tbh!

I'm actually looking forward to relaxing and peace and quiet but I know DD (12) will get bored after a few days and want to go shopping etc!

We are staying all inclusive so will be pretty much tied to the hotel. There is an entertainment team which should keep DD occupied for some of the time (she loves joining in with all the activities!) but just wanted to know what other options there are in Taba

I stayed at the Taba Heights Marriott a few years ago and had a great time. There really weren't many shops when I was there, other than hotel gift shop. I remember there being a cash point but not sure about anywhere to change travellers' cheques.

There was a day out excursion to Dahab which had lots of shops.

Essentially though, I relaxexd by pool, had romantic week with boyfriend at the time and did quite a bit of scuba diving....

I don't know where the Sol y Mar is, the Hyatt was on the same stretch of beach as the Marriott and a few others. At least you have an entertainment team for dd (we didn't have anything like that at the Hyatt), but I would really recommend taking masks and snorkels and fins, as the snorkelling, certainly off the Hyatt bit of the beach was just AMAZING. and I think there were some activities laid on by the hotel (hazy memory of doing an aqua class with my mother!). You could also do an introduction to scuba diving day with dd perhaps?

Oooh I hadnt thought of scuba diving , she'd love that! Not sure I could get the equipment in the case though - assume you can buy masks etc over there?

I've seen the trip to Dahab advertised, and also one to Eilat - any experience of either of those? I expect there'll be a lot of 'hassle' from people trying to get you buy things?!
