Never stayed in Naples itself but the nearby Amalfi coast is a very lovely area, largish seaside resorts like Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano. They're nice in a quiet sort of way, not beachy as such it is fairly rocky but a very relaxing place to stay.

How long are you there for?

Stayed there for a few days in 2000 (I think).
It was very dodgy and scary around the area by the train station (police on motorbikes with guns)- cheap hotels are usually around this area.
The marina area was lovely, though touristy.
The little streets and piazzas and churches to wander through are lovely and romantic.

Very close to Mount Vesuvius and Pompey - we did Vesuvius in the morning and Pompey in the afternoon - if you get there towards the end of the day (3-4ish) everyone is leaving and you have the place to yourself in the dusk!

Is that how you spell Pompey?

Naples is a very interesting city - full of things to do and see. However it is also quite run down - it is a very poor part of Italy. However, the area surrounding Naples is absolutely amazing and easily the best place I've ever been on holiday to. Hope this helps.

Naples is huge and busy and I would NOT drive there. I would go for the Amalfi coast. Pompeii is def worth visiting.

It is a huge drive south though from Venice. If you cut across country, the Ligurian coast line is stunning (Cinque Terra villages), Portovenere etc oh, and Portofino

Naples is a toilet - don't go!! We were there in 2005 for one night (to visit Pompei) and it is horrible - rough as can be.

Yes, do the Amalfi Coast - stay in Amalfi itself or Ravello. Atrani is lovely. Positano is very very crowded and expensive. You can get to Pompeii in about an hour and a half tops from there.

Naples is a day trip, nothing more - and NEVER try to drive in Naples. They are insane drivers.
