France - Holiday advice for Marseilles to Cannes area

Being neither rich and skinny or famous I'm a bit intimidated by the idea of the South of France. I'm wondering if there is anywhere in this region that is non-pretentious and family friendly? We're looking to travel end May/early June (half-term)- so not French peak season. DC will be 4 & 6. Options are hire a car and stay in a Eurocamp type affair, or train & taxi to small resort, hire an apartment and just walk/local bus to beach, shops etc.

Frejus / St Raphael for example seem to have campsites a-plenty. What is this area like? Any ideas on where to go, where NOT to go, greatly appreciated!

I LOVE the South of France. Have stayed Antibes/Juan Les Pins/Nice/St Tropez/Villefranche Sur Mer/Port Grimaud All gorgeous.

For little children, Juan les Pin has the most lovely beach, and it's easy to get the train up and down the coast.

At Port Grimaud there is a big campsite right on the beach

You can walk easily into Port Grimaud and get boats to St Tropez/Ste Maxime/St Raphael.

We stayed at the sister site to that Kontiki on Pamplelonne beach at St Tropez. You definitely need a car for that, but there is lots to do in the area, and gorgeous beaches.

Also Cavaliere and Le Lavandou further up the coast are very nice. I'm planning that for a future holiday.

Thank you, just the kind of info I'm after.
So it does sound possible to go 'car-less'. Juan les Pin is sounding quite attractive. [excited!]

We stayed here a few years ago (dd was 18 mos I think). It wasn't that cheap but it was lovely! Like just moving into someones house for a week. I could happily have stayed permanently. Everything within easy walking distance. I should get commission the number of times I have recommended it....

PS I'm not rich and thin either!
