I'd never really considered Nigera to be a holiday destination before but I found a travel guide on Opodu and it made me think it could actually be a really interesting place to go. I would be going with DS (3.7), my mum, aunty and older cousin.

I have been there once to visit a Nigerian friend and his family. They made me feel very welcome and I had a great time, but I don't think I would have had the same experience without local people to look out for me. I'm quite surprised to hear anyone consider it as a holiday destination, TBH. When I was there 10 years ago, Lagos was huge, sprawling, dilapidated, hectic, crowded, polluted city with big areas of extreme poverty and some comparatively very small wealthy tourist pockets and gated communities (ie. Victoria island, where the posh hotels are).

There are some beautiful beaches outside the town, but the holiday industry was non-existent when I was there so it was just vast empty stretches of white sand, sea and the occasional fisherman. Depends what kind of holiday you're looking for, really - if you plan to stay in a hotel the whole time or explore a bit more.

And - maybe lots has happened to make Lagos more tourist friendly in the last decade? If so, hopefully someone more familiar with the place will be along shortly to put me right. Good luck with your holiday planning!
