Trying to find somewhere romantic, special, central and not too bank breaking to stay for a weekend. Having never been to Prague before woudl appreciate some tips.

Where do we want to be near - Wenceslas Square, Old Town Square, Prague Castle?

I imagine we will spend our days wandering - but not too far as I have creaky back and hips so we want to be fairly close to the hub.

Any ideas?

We werent far from the Old town sqaure, am currently looking for name of hotel will get back to you on that.

It isnt huge, so its only 15 mins to walk from old town to bridge, with plenty of bars/shops on the way.

Very cold though.

Thanks geordieminx.

Just mulling over the temperature and debating alternative options!

We stayed here It was a lovely hotel and was convenient and close to everything plus for things which were further away you can get the tram which costs peanuts. I was suffering with SPD at the time (35weeks pg with DS2 as I recall) and we were able to manage.

When are you going? If soon, don't forget hats, gloves, scarves and boots!

We stayed near Wenceslas Square but tbh I'd say stay near Old Town Square if you can.

pragues ok, not v romantic really, plenty of hen/stag dos and strip clubs (not what i was expecting at all) Its quite compact so no worries seeing everthing.
Have you been to Bruge? That really is romantic, beautiful, lovely beer, food (die karmeliet 3star michelin place yum yum)

janeite · 24/01/2010 20:35

I think it's changed a bit. We didn't see any hen or stag parties, or strip clubs (couple of posters for one) - then again, it was -8 when we were there!

Tobermory · 24/01/2010 20:35

plusonemore, Have been to Bruge and agree it is stunning, would return in a heartbeat. Dont think it is possible this time though, no flights from local airports and think we would spend too long travelling if we were to attempt eurostar. It was high on my list though!

janeite, the places i was looking at seemed much closer to the castle and old town square than wenceslas so thats good to know.

hotel josef which was where I stayed (although it was 6+ years ago)

The reviews on tripadvisor are still good - 28th out of 640... so might be worth a punt 0- especially as its 600 metres from town square.

Just read your other thread - would pick Barcelona over Prague every time - while it wont be warm in Barca in feb, it wont be freezing!

Plus you could take your dh on a tour of the Noucamp - if he's a footie fan?

Tobermory · 24/01/2010 20:45

No, he's not allowed to watch football!!
Im an F1 widow not football!

They do tours of the stadium - no match... dont panic!

Def Barca if you can get flights

meltedmarsbars · 24/01/2010 20:56

Hi, my dh is Czech so we have visited Prague many times, and now usually stay in this hotel which is right by his folks and fairly budget.

We go to the Theatre, to art exhibitions (his lot are arty), to eat in pubs, and also Jidelna (these are stand-up eateries serving cheap but filling worker's food, usually found behind butchers).

If you do find walking painful, the trams are cheap and efficient and there is a metro too.

Wenceslas Sq, although a famous political site, is not beautiful. The Castle and old town are the picturesque areas.

Have fun!

We stayed here a few years ago and really liked it - v close to the Charles bridge and the castle, lovely part of town I thought.
