Amsterdam, Dublin or London?

Have free flights to one of the above( we live in Glasgow). Thinking of booking a weekend break for dh and I, probably April(ish) time?

We could also go to Paris, but that would involve 2 flights, and given that we are only going Friday to Sunday, thought it might be a bit of a waste of time?

Any thoughts?

What do you want to do while there?

Do you want arts and culture, relaxation, shopping, good food etc?

chopstheduck · 18/01/2010 09:34

Amsterdam.

happymostofthetime · 18/01/2010 09:35

Amsterdam has it all

geordieminx · 18/01/2010 09:37

Food, drink, wandering about, little bit of "culcha" little bit of shopping, but mostly wandering around, stopping off for nice wine and sitting outside.

See, I'd say London. Great restaurants, great shopping, ridiculous amounts of culture. The only downside is hotels are ££££.

Amsterdam definitely nice for a more relaxing vibe - you've got the water, cosy cafes galore and the people are nice. prob easier to find a decent hotel that's not bank-breaking.

BlauerEngel · 18/01/2010 11:35

All great cities, but Amsterdam is best is terms of relaxed wandering around and cafe culture. There's too much motorised traffic in London and Dublin to make it relaxing for the weekend.

tiredemma · 18/01/2010 11:38

God. I hated Amsterdam. I thought it was filthy, dog shit and cyclists everywhere and crackheads on street corners.

Dublin was not much diffrent tbh. And London is only slightly better

The only city I have ever visited that has impressed me was Barcelona.

tiredemma · 18/01/2010 11:38

sorry- out of those three I would choose London

geordieminx · 18/01/2010 12:25

really suprised no one has said Dublin.

Tiredemma, Barca is our fav city break (after NYC) but cant fly there with airmiles from scotland, plus i've been twice in the last 3 years so fancied somewhere different?

See, I love Dublin, but I do think you have to know it to really appreciate it's charm. The tourist trail is a bit dire.

Barcelona totally underwhelmed me. Lacked charm; witnessed very many muggings in the short time we were there; that God awful Ramblas bit ; very touristy (although do like the weirdness of Gaudi architecture)

A breadth of answers, here

NYC my fave city, too

upahill · 18/01/2010 12:45

I've been to Dublin four times, once on the tourist trail, temple bar and the like and the other times to mooch around. To be honest not that keen. Only went back because of the company that was going. Amsterdam was ok. London is ok.
Krakow not an option?

MrsMattie · 18/01/2010 12:47

Ooh, yes, Krakow is lovely.

What time of year are you going on this break again? Nice if the weather is warm enough for sitting outside as soe pretty squares ideal for sitting outside with a drink in Krakow.

Seville? Very pretty.

I love a good weekend break!

notnowbernard · 18/01/2010 12:48

Amsterdam

geordieminx · 18/01/2010 13:22

nice would be my first choice, but unfortunately no flights from scotland with air miles, and easy jet only have flights on one day of the week low season so doesnt lend itself to a weekend break. Starting to think i might use them for something else rather than wasting them just for the sake of it.
