thinking about ile de re. already have booked clarys plage but have always wanted to go to ile de re but am worried there may not be enough to keep kids entertained for 3 weeks - especially if it rains? But then again maybe theres not a lot to do when it rains in clarys plage? Oh god!!!!

What's clarys plage? Is it on Ile de Re?

We went to Ile de Re for 5 days and that was long enough for us. Enjoyed riding bikes round the island tho, apart from getting very badly sunburnt cos forgot to put cream on my shoulders! Wasn't much to do apart from beaches and cycling unless we just didn't know about it.

There's always La Rochelle on the mainland, not too far if you want to escape the island for a day.

hotpotmama thanks for that. I have this idea that ile de re is lovely ie something me and dh would love. but don't think 11 year old will be happy just being on bikes and pottering around the shops for 3 weeks. what does anyone else think?

agree with hotpotmama - a few days is ample. quite a 'different' place (although many moons since we went). remember wild horses, small resorts, cycling (it is flat) and lots of mozzies! personally think older kids would be bored stiff. la rochelle is vibrant with good restaurants and some nice beaches nearby

We spent two weeks last summer and never ran out of things to do and could happily stayed another week.. Never left the island at all. Dd 15 and ds 7.

It all depends what you want. No flashy things, lots of cycling, 1/2 day trips, beaches, markets, wanders, swimming, surfing- loads of water based sports- para sailing, windsurfing etc.
