Right, after posting various topics about Italy we have finally booked the flights. We decided on Genoa in the end as it was the cheapest. There are loads of apartments and villas near the airport at reasonable prices. Most seem to be in mountain villages. Can anyone recommend a particular area or place and do you know what the roads are like between Genoa airport and the mountains. I don't fancy driving on a knife edge of a cliff.

The roads are fine - motorway as I recall from Genoa down the coast. A few viaducts though. I would recommend the Cinque Terre, or Portovenere/Lerici - tis gorgeous round there. One of my fave bits of the world. Have to go to a meeting but will post more later.....

Thanks. I have just booked the flights. £440 for the 4 of us. I am leaping about the room in joy. Fabulous.

It can be easy to get around by train. Depends on how much you have to carry. We have stayed either side of Genoa.

We stayed here the first time we went. You can get the train or boat, up and down the coast to the Cinque Terre villages and Portofino . The scenery is stunning. They do proper apartments now too.

2nd time we stayed here. It's a bit flatter round there, so not so "pretty" but the beaches are better. Loano is a lovely town.

The food was generally excellent, and if you pick your spot, not that expensive. Glorious weather too. And we went in September both times.

I have also stayed here Maybe a bit of a longer drive, but easy drive to the "mountains" and the coast.

Thank you. That all looks great. I am so excited now.
