I am planning a 2 week trip to Pacific coast of either Mexico or Costa Rica. I have a 3 month old boy and I am worried about:-

The effects of the long haul flights - i.e. bad air quality and adequate care and attention for DS

The time zone changes

Tropical deseases.

Does anyone have any experience of this and is it unreasonable to put your baby through this potential ordeal?.....

Hi TMTNEA,
We flew to Antigua with my 2.5month old last year (for a month). Experience was that he was jetlagged for the first week or so, and my bf times etc were way early morning compared to his normal feeds. We managed to get a seat on the bulkhead with a cotbed for him, which was great, though i wouldn't have liked to have done it with him in my lap (ie without the bulkhead seat). he slept pretty happily most of the time, and didn't seem to suffer any ill effects from the flight (tho he was a bit grumpy at the heat when we got off the plane).
the only disease we were concerned about was malaria, so we had a travel cotbed (samsonite fold down type, weighed 1kg or so), which had a mosquito net built in. We also got a carseat mosquito net cover, so when he was out we put the carseat on the pram, with the cover so that he was safe there too.

so no... i don't think it's unreasonable! You need to enjoy your life too!
