Jersey or Guernsey?

Can any of you travellers out there recommend which is better for a self catering holiday. Better meaning prettier and more suited to a 2.5 year old. Am thinking one of the two for 2010 summer hols. Any views, good and bad, gratefully received.

Jersey is lovely, lots of beaches, restaurants, history from WW2. Guernsey, I think, is more rural, less to do.

Guernsey! Definitely. Much prettier and St Peter Port has some gorgeous restaurants and shops. No McDonalds! And there's stacks of history in Guernsey. Castle Cornet is lovely for a wander and has museums. The beaches are great and there are some wonderful hidden away bays and cliffs.

I'd also say Guernsey has a much stronger French influence. Dix Neuf is a gorgeous French cafe/restaurant.

Jersey is more like the English mainland. Chain shops in the high street etc. and a big leisure centre. It's bigger which means more driving and faster driving, while Guernsey is more compact.

(Yes, I admit it, I was born in Guernsey so slightly, slightly biased, but I visited Jersey a couple of times and was never really impressed.)

Guernsey for me too

Ooooh, I think I'm sold Carmen, your description sounds right up our street.

You should work for their tourist board , you'd make them a fortune

Aww, perhaps I'm channeling a little homesickness for Sarnia Cherie

Hope you have a lovely time whichever you pick! Oh, also you can take a daytrip to Herm or Sark on a little ferry from Guernsey. Never been to Sark but Herm is fun (pack sunscreen! Everyone burns there.)

We went to Guernsey 2 years ago when DS was 4 and had a great time. Had some trouble finding SC holiday but this is where we went. You do need a car although it is not far to anywhere.

Never been to Jersey although would like to give it a try

Thanks everyone, think Guernsey wins!
