my sister in law is terminally ill and i really feel we should go but am i mad to think i could take my 5 & 7 yr old to an emotional situation without adding more stress plus jet lag .
we couldnt afford the flights in the summer and they are now more affordable,

Pretty good reason to go IMO.

(I'm so sorry about your SIL)

I went to Australia last Christmas for 6 days for a similar reason, but admittedly didn't take my children. The jet lag wasn't too bad.

If you really want to go, go. Children are remarkably adaptable and resilient. But then if you can find someone to have your children so you and your DH/DP can go alone then maybe do that instead.

thanks sidge
we're between homes at the mo, waiting for our new to be ready so taking with us kinda solves the awkaward problem of where to leave them thats convient for school.
both MIL's are too far away.

you re right they are resilent. and can adapt.

if just me and dh went we could go for just a wkend fri to mon which would be ok they could miss school and stay with granny.

thanks appreciate your thoughts, just need to work this out in my head.

DH often works in San Fran and me and DC have been over for this sort of length of time. It is always fine, and it is such a fab place too ! Last time we went they would have been 8 and 10, but have done this younger too, like yours. Young children are very adaptable, and I would always just go for it. They can always get over being tired when they are at home again !

Make sure you take them to see the sea lions off Pier 39 - they will absolutely love that ( you couldn't not ) and it will be a really positive thing to do if it is not the most positive and happy trip. IYKWIM

No, but only because we always use DH's air miles so we have to go BA. However we have flown Virgin long haul and they were fabulous, as good as if not better than BA. I would probably try to avoid using an American airline if at all poss because the service is not so good. Make sure with either Virgin or BA that you pre book children's meals so they get them quickly.

I would say do it; any minor stress with the DCs will be forgotten but you and your DH might regret not going. 5 & 7 not so teeny as to make it the stuff of nightmares.

thanks.
still waiting to hear if they want us to visit..
