Driving from UK to Munich

We're hoping to visit family in Munich next year, and for several reasons it would be really useful if we could go in our own car.
Has anyone ever driven it?
Or does anyone know that part of Europe well enough to know what would be the best route?

I'm sure everyone's going to say we should fly, but it will be Christmas time and we'll have 3 children. We need to be able to take their Christmas presents, stockings etc. with us!
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Whereabouts in the UK are you? I just googled and it suggests from Calais to go through Northern France and then into southern Germany, which seems reasonable. Definitely definitely go through the Eurotunnel, much easier when you have childrne.

We've done the trip frequently both pre and post DCs. We're in Herts and either catch a Dover-Calais ferry or the Eurotunnel. Then drive across northern France (toll free) via Lille, into Belgium, then Aachen, Köln, Frankfurt, Nürnberg and down to Munich. We do it in one trip (even with children) and tend to drive through the night when the autobahns are quieter and the children sleep.

DH used to work in Munich many years ago so tried many different routes to get there and this is the one that he found quickest (due to most speed-unrestricted sections!).

Only just checked back, thank you both for the advice! We're in the Midlands.

Will you need winter tyres fitted to your car if you are going at Christmas?
