Day Out at the Seaside with 2yo

Does anyone know of good seaside resorts, on South Coast (not too far to drive from nr Heathrow)? I want to take ds (26 months) for his first proper visit to the seaside, over the next couple of weeks. Will probably just do a day trip, so don't want to be overwhelmed with a busy resort with loads to do. Somewhere not too full of other people!! Any ideas/recommendations would be much appreciated! Thanks all!

Thanks for your response GF, although if the weather doesn't get better we won't be going anywhere!

Bexhill-on-sea? It is pebbly at high tide, but there are rock pools and sandy bits at low tide.
Eastbourne?
Pevensey Bay?
West Wittering? (Is that what I mean?)
Those little plces on the coast underneath Arundel?

camber is excellent - nothing there except a snack bar cafe, and miles and miles of sandy beach...fab.

Thanks for suggestions so far!! I've been poring over the map to find them! Anyone know of places along the coast between Brighton - Portsmouth that would be nice? Sandy beach essential. Would be especially interested in places which are not widely known of. Thanks.

I think the Witterings fall into that area, toothy, and they are lovely - quiet and peaceful with parking and grass behind the beach (IIRC)

West Wittering - EC blue flag

Can't find a link to a beach at E Wittering so maybe it's just the W one.

(btw when I was small we lived nr Heathrow and W Wittering was where we used to go for a day out, and that was when cars only went at about 50mph) (so probably took no longer than nowadays )
