USA - Beach Holiday with 2 under 3, September time, not Florida - any ideas

We were thinking of going September time to the US, a beach holiday but not Florida as we will do that when they are a little older (both under 3). Any ideas on where to go, was thinking of New England area but not sure what the weather will be like in September, dont want it too hot but warm enough for teeshirts etc and warm enough to paddle. Anybody every been or any suggestions for anywhere else please?

Cape Cod? Will be good for Whale watching at that time of year too with the warmer water.

My two loved it there (ds was 3 at the time) and we did too. Should be fairly cheap then as the American schools go back at the beginning of Sept.

If not New England, California has some pretty spectacular beaches too!

North Carolina.
Alabama

Both not so well known by the Brits and drop dead gorgeous.

What about the carolinas somewhere? nice atlantic coast?
You'll be ok in New England in the first two weeks of Sept for heat, usually in the70's, but beware after labour day, any the water parks (should you wish to go) shut! If its the last two weeks, you'll be getting into leaf peeping season!
