Where to go in Portugal - that is not 'Benidorm'!!

Hi all,
looking for a few day break mid October in Portugal.
Pretty flexible, would love some sun and swimming, but main thing is that is not too Benidorm a foreign country!
Any ideas?

wont be too warm in mid october. personally i havent found anywhere to write home about in portugal... didnt like it and i hate benidorm too. sorry

Lisbon is wonderful. Are you taking dc's? It was lovely when I went there early November a few years ago. It was 20-24. Loved it.

Haven't been anywhere in Portugal like Benidorm (and nowhere in Spain like that either) Lisbon if you want a city, Lagos otherwise.

Lagos is lovely, been lots of times.
Sea is freezing in Portugal (its the Atlantic Ocean)!!
