passport application - ILs as countersignatories?

Reading the guidelines for my passport renewal it says that the person providing the countersignature must not be a member of my family.

But can it be a member of DH's family, i.e. my in-law?

I live abroad and am having a hard time thinking of anyone suitable to sign who has got sufficient "standing". (must say something about my friends!)

Thanks for that. I'm going to have to go for my doctor I think, although she doesn't know me personally

It does say they have to live in the UK and have a UK passport, so would that be a problem as you're living abroad?

No, on the notes I have from the consular service I can use a person of similar standing in my country of residence.

Now just have to get them to sign something official in English
