Need to hire a car in UK to drive to France & back - any recommendations?

I'm going to need to hire a car in the UK(london) at the end of sept for 5 days to drive to France and back.

Are there any companies that offer a reasonable rate for this? Has anyone done this? Who did you use?

Thanks.

Hi there- we hired a car from Budget (0844 581 9996 is their national number) to drive to France at the beginning of July; it cost about £500 plus about £70 for European Breakdown cover for unlimited mileage.Excess was £500 so we took very good care of the car!I shopped around and didn't get much cheaper, but we're up in Perth so maybe you'll have more options if you're down south

Sorry- forgot to say we hired it for 14 days.

Thanks jinkers. I will take a look at their site.

Any other recommendations?

No recommendations for that particular hire, but it is possible to insure against the excess; some companies do it themselves & there is at least one company which specialises.

eg insurance4carhire.com who charge £49 for a year (max 31 days at a time) - are you likely to hire a car again in the next 12 months?

We hired in France through carhire3000 who do their own very reasonable waiver. Our hire was for 5 days & the waiver was £12 I think. DH managed to bump into a deer that shot out in front of him, the excess was £500 & it was taken from our card when we returned the car but we did get it back in full. They organise hire all over Europe, they have an 0800 number & are very helpful, I would recommend them in general.

That's really helpful Ponders. There is a possibility I will need to hire again so this would be worth paying.

Unfortunately for me they will only insure the excess if you hire a car more than 150km away from your home. This is no good for me.

Oh, damn

What about carhire3000? Does the same apply to them?
