luggage and connecting flights

Can anyone tell me what happens to my cases when you have connecting flights?
We are flying Heathrow-Madrid-Jerez(same iberia airline, just different flights)?

Do the bags get transferred automatically or do we collect them from the carousel and do a mad dash to the next check in desk?

Am flying next week and have only just thought of this.

As long as you booked the flights as one journey and not seperately e.g. heathrow to madrid, Madrid onwards you should be able to check your luggage all the way to your final destination. It's worth making a point of mentioning it at check in though.

Yes, I would just point it out at check-in. If it´s a short transfer, also presume your luggage will be delayed and carry any essentials in your hand luggage...

Normally you check them all the way through
