has anyone been to Bruges? can you recommend what to see and, more importantly, any restaurants/cafes/bars?

mmmmmm love bruges

bars: de Grunenburge, Beetlejuice, also the bar in the brewery (cant remember name, the tour is quite good)

restaurants: if you can....here but its a 3 star Michelin place. Amazing though, like eating for the first time. Dont eat in the main square, you will be ripped off, go for little dingey looking places! Def do a boat ride (or 2!) dont do diamond museum, folklore museum is wierd could be good for a laugh and also a bar ]

just stroll from bar to bar as much as you can trying as many beers as you can! its so compact you can walk round it in a couple of hours easy!

The restaurants around the Grand Place - the square that the church with the very tall tower is in - are very good and atmospheric. We had the most fantastic meal there when we passed through a few years ago. The children's meals were fillet steak and chips!
