South Africa with baby and young children - advice needed!

My sister's getting married in South Africa early next year. By then we'll have a 4 year old, a 20 month old and a 2 month old. My Mum's recently filled my head with horror stories about how unsafe SA is so now I'm getting apprehensive.

Can anyone give me any advice on travelling in SA with little ones? We're flying to Cape Town and then need to drive up the east coast for 2 hours to where the wedding is. I thought you could hire a car and do this but my Mum thinks not. Is she being paranoid? Also I would love to know how child-friendly SA is. Is it easy to feed and change babies? What's the attitude to breastfeeding in public? Any recommendations on where to go with pre-school children? Can you drive about and please yourself or is it best to stay in a resort? Any pointers for good websites? I'd be grateful for any advice.
