This is my first mumsnet message so here goes:
Going to Crete (Stalis for week 1 and Rethymnon for week 2)at end of May with family (3 kids- 2yo,4yo,6m) I'm wondering whether I have to haul 3 boxes of formula and boxes of powdered foods all the way or can I get milupa aptamil extra anywhere plus normal jar babyfood? Also any advice on Crete/what to bring/ watch out for etc in general would be welcome?

Hi, here is a thread about this and I listed all the formulas that can be bought over here. If you need the 1st stage formula remember that it is only sold in chemists. Stage 2 is in supermarkets.More in a minute...

More general advice. If you search archived messages I think there have been loads in the past about travelling to hot countries with babies and young children.

i went to stalis for a week last year, not with my dd though, but it was really nice. theres quite a big supermarket there which sold most things foodwise, and nice shops there. and if you're not driving there are a lot of buses and theres the road train as well, which is just a train on wheels that goes up and down from malia the capital to another place i couldnt pronounce let alone spell but that might be quite good for the kids to go on. have fun x

I had a lovely holiday in Crete a few years ago. I'd highly recommend a trip to see the ancient ruins at Knossos.

tammybear · 15/05/2005 12:48

oh yes we went there too. really enjoyed that, and we also had a trip to krissy island, that was beautiful. had a boat ride there, and it was just golden sands, clear waters and beautiful shells, not that you were allowed to take them!

joniem · 16/05/2005 20:38

Thanks GRMUM for that info. A few other daft questions:
Tammybear can you remember any outstanding restaurants in Stalis? Has anyone been to Rethymnon - any recommendations there? Should I expect the sea and the pools to be freezing next week? Is it cold at night?

i cant remember what the place was called, but there was a really nice restaurant we went to twice, once for our anniversary, it has a gorgeous fountain in the middle of the restaurant and was next to a really beautiful tree. thats as much as i remember, but werent any other restaurants with fountains inside.

be warned though, in the evening, you get every restaurant owner coming up to you trying to lure you into their restaurant. gets really annoying! and there was a guy there that owns a hotel, is in charge of the road train tickets at the stalis stop, and runs a sort of cinema type thing where he shows films that wont come out for ages.

we went end of august, so the weather may not be quite the same but it was quite pleasant in the evening, and the sea was quite cold, but you soon get use to it! hope you enjoy it, im so xxx

The sea will not be as warm as it is by the end of the summer, but not unbearable. People are going to the beach now at weekends. Evenings and early mornings are much cooler than the middle of the day.By the sea you may find the breezes make it cooler. You should be fine with sweat shirts though.

Hi all

Im new and i was wondering if anyone can help. You ses we (hubby,me and 3 girls)have decided to go abroad this year for the 1st time. We can only go in july/aug and very hot i.e. over 28 is too hot. can anyone suggest anywhere thats nice? HELP ME PLEASE

Kiwinyc · 05/03/2009 22:14

If you don't want hot temps you're probably best off sticking to Scandanavia or the mountainous alpine regions of France/Switzerland/Austria/Italy i.e. ski resort areas that are open in the Summer too Depending on how high you are, temps average about 25-28 degrees I think.

Anywhere beachy in the Med is blistering in July/Aug...
