Not sure about Cherbourg but we recently stayed in Calais in a Suiteshotel(sp)for something like EU69 for the night. It was fabulous - ensuite with bath and shower; microwave; fridge; safe; usual coffee making stuff; TV with free internet and films; double bed with a pull-out from the bottom of it and another single bed. This was a family room and could also be separated by pulling an IKEA-type screen across the room to give our 2.9yo a room of her own.

Worth looking!

We often use the BBHotel. Basic but adequate. It is close to the Aucahn hypermarket. The additional beds are on a mezzanine (with stairgate)so then the childen
were younger they slep with me in the large double bed with dp upstairs on one of the single beds.

If you can drive a little further (fast dual carriageway) and ferry times permit,we prefer the Novotel at Bayeux.
