I need to go to Gateshead in late June... went onto National rail Inquiries but there is no ticket available - well nothing under £150... so do I just call GNER? Do I go to my local train station??? I mean - never done this.... help ?

If you book it in advance i think it's cheaper, and if you go after 9:30. off peak. I'll ask my DH because he works for a train company, where are you from???

moondog · 09/05/2005 09:42

God,trains in this country are a bloody nightmare!! Who the hell understands the 1001 different tickets.
The company should have a webisite on which you can book ahead, pupuce. Considerably cheaper too!
Ours is Virgin (if you pay £5 more at w/ends you can sit in 1st class and have unlimited drinks!!)
Don't know yours though. Do a Google?

its not really really urgent is it?? I'll ask him when he gets in he might have a rough estimate of how much and what deal to go for. I'll try to get back to you asap.

Hulababy · 09/05/2005 10:11

Have you had a look on thetrainline.com

pupuce · 09/05/2005 10:12

I need to leave on the 23rd (a Thursday) in the afternoon and come back on Sunday (26) evening...
Other than that am flexible... at the rate I am being quoted I think flying is cheaper !
I am still searching but won't commit until I hear from you... thanks again!

Try and avoid Friday tracvel too if you can, as they are dearer.

There is a Saver Return for £98.00.

The Sunday seems to be the issue - none of the cheaper tickets available.

compo · 09/05/2005 10:19

I think if you ring 08457 484950 they will tell you everything you need to know

jessicasmummy · 09/05/2005 10:20

is it a single or return you want? you can get a single from as little as £36.... need to know exact dates of travel tho.

Hulababy · 09/05/2005 10:20

Of you were to come back on the Monday - price goes down to £45 return

Hulababy · 09/05/2005 10:21

How many of you are travelling? Any children?

jessicasmummy · 09/05/2005 10:22

ive brought it up as £45 return on national rail - i would go to your local station and ask them to do it all for you.

pupuce · 09/05/2005 10:32

I am going on my own.
Staying until Monday is a problem for 2 reasons... it's an extra night in a B&B... and I am also on-call for a birth and have committed to be back on the Sunday...
I will also ask our local station - you never know.

have you asked if they have any APEX tickets - these are non amedible non refundable tickets and are often availble booking direct with the train company.

pupuce · 15/05/2005 09:50
