United Airlines to USA --- do we take car-seat for 18month-old's own plane-seat?

Big differences of opinion in our circle of friends.

  1. Some think you can't even take a carseat onto a plane.
  2. Some say certain airlines you can and some you can't.

Separate issue:

  1. Some think it would just be a faff to take a carseat and the toddler would be happier with more space in her own planeseat between ours.

Please give your opinions.

This is their policy for travelling with infants and children:-

Have you already purchased a seat for your child?.

Anyone know about securing the car-seat firmly? Can't find out much on the web.

We have done it once

It is a faff to lug it down the aisle etc
Can't think of any benefit so I would say don't bother
