Hi dh has just informed me he is taking me to Madrid in 2 weeks for a long weekend as a birthday treat. Its not a city i've thought about visiting but i'm very pleased.

Can anyone who's been recommend some things for us to do? We will be minus the children, hooray.

try www.mumabroad.com, they have a madrid section. I know, you're going alone but if you post on their forum, someone will certainly help

I have been to Madrid lots as my friend lives there. It is a really great city. If you like art then there are fab galleries, my favourite is La Reina Sofia which is the modern art gallery. It has Picasso's 'Guernica'. There are usually lots of exhibitions on at various places throughout the city. If you like dance there is often ballet on at the opera house (no probs with language there) or modern dance at a theate outside the centre that I can't remember the name of (will come back to me). Loads of great restaurants but don't bother going before about 9.30 at the very earliest or they will be shut or you will be eating on your own until everyone else turns up (about 10 to 10.30 usually). Where will you be staying?

Go to Plaza Santa Ana for eating and drinking. Plaza Mayor is more touristy but also worth a visit day or night.
Have a wander through Parque Retiro. You can't miss it. Massive park with lovely gardens, boating lake etc. Go on a Sunday and watch all the wealthy locals parade around looking gorgeous.
It's a fab city. Have fun!
