thinking of doing the unthinkable and hurtling over to Europe for some sun at the end of the summer...where would it be cheapest to rent an appt and to buy food for self catering...Sp, It or Fr...also where within the country is the cheapest place?

Anywhere in the eurozone is much of a muchness, but perhaps the Pyrenees might offer lower prices in general. The accommodation should certainly be less than the ritzier Cote d'Azur or similar options.

As it sounds as if you'll have a car, do your main shopping in the out-of-town hypermarkets (talking about France in particular here, as that's where I know ) - they are often huge places which sell just about everything you could need - and plenty you may never have ANY use for - and will always be cheaper than resort-centre supermarkets.

I think Spain is generally cheaper. France tends to be expensive and Italy too. Parts of Greece are relatively inexpensive - avoid the islands.

Croatia is supposed to be very reasonable?

My friend lives in the Costa del Sol and can't believe how much prices have risen over the past 12 months - perhaps still lower than some places, but much higher than recent past
