Just after a bit of advice please, any recommendations/anyone to avoid? What kind of cost? Who do you book this kind of thing with? Is it all on your normal insurance?
Looking at Normandy, 1 week.

RAC & AA do it, so do Eurotunnel - would guess the ferry companies might too/

Try Eurorescue: www.eurorescue.co.uk/

Do you have UK breakdown cover? Check if it covers you in Europe - some do. Also if it is a newish car, it might be covered by the manufacturer.

i phoned the aa and got there cover for 1 week which was about £60.

DH has always phoned up his car insurance company before going abroad in the car - our insurance company seems to be happy to give us breakdown protection for the length of the holiday even though we don't have this from our insurance company for the rest of the year. Worth checking this out!

We use europassistance, breakdown cover plus travel insurance for a family for a fortnight is about £100.

We went with Europ Assistance via the link on Moneysavingexpert.com which is an annual policy for the UK with cover in Europe for 90 days, cost £59. I then did an annual family travel insurance policy for about £35 for medical etc.

wow thanks guys have had quotes from AA RAC Eurotunnel and car insurance vary around 40 pounds for the week insurance co was the cheapest (which makes MsPepperpots look like a good deal!)
Have also discovered that car insurance co has gradually been removing all the things we had previously (europe cover, replacement car etc) without making it clear and has value as 'market value' which means we'd get very little despite the fact that our knowledge of our car, low milage, nice careful drivers makes it worth more to us IYSWIM
