Which way do you go? If you go through Telford (which you do going from Wales to the midlands) then I would thoroughly recommend the Ironbridge Gorge museums, particularly the science activity one which is called Enginuity but is excellent despite the awful name.

What about Warwick Castle? We live in N Hampshire and it is about half way for us. It is quite expensive but you can probably get money off vouchers or use Nectar points or something.

Or Cadbury's World in Birmingham?

Greenwood forest is quite good on a dry day. They have trails ( including a bare fot trail....), boat ride, a green rollercoaster, petting farm, and other things that I can't remember. Oh yes, a fantastic adventure playground. Near Caernarfon , here's the website :www.greenwoodforestpark.co.uk
My DC school goes there every year for their annual trip.

I have just done the journey from Caernarfon to Lightwater, Surrey... so I know how long that journey takes!

It's a distance of over 260 miles by road, taking a good 5 hours... so I don't feel you want to stop long at any point.

Trentham Garden Centre (part of Trentham Estate) is (off the A34) a short way from M6 J15 (so before you get to M6 Toll) map. Could stop there for lunch. Your 6 year old may like just looking around, or letting off some steam in the play area. There is also a retail village, should your 6 year old like trying to get you to buy them things.

RAF Cosford is just brilliant, we had to drag our DC's away and DD wants to be an aircraft engineer now
