Advice re Australian passport

Have just found out that I may be eligible for an Australian passport but not 100% sure? My grandfather (dad's dad) was born in Oz so an Aussie citizen and had Oz passport. When my dad's sister was recently offered a job there, they just gave her a passport no questions asked. My dad has said that he can do the same and he said that I can too. Does anyone know if this is right? Don't actually need it right now but nice to know I can have it if necessary!

I thought only Australian citizens could be issued Australian passports. It's possible your aunt and dad could be Australian citizens by descent (as their father was Australian) which is why they are eligible for a passport. Not sure it would also extend to you! The easiest way to find out would be to contact the Australian passport office.

Yeah that's what I thought skimummy -but my dad is a pretty intelligent and level headed guy so that's why I am asking. Just wondered if anyone on here had similar experience before I went trawling off to the passport office! Thanks x

I had to prove that I had lived at least 2 yrs in Oz for my children to get citizenship by descent

My Nan was born in australia. My cousin looked into it and was told the same thing. He could go to the embassy with all of the relevant papers and get dual nationality. I am tempted to do it but it all seems like a bit too much hassle

Yes purpleflower I feel exactly the same - why do I need dual nationality? I'm not planning to even visit Oz in the near future! But I think I just like the idea of it!

If you are going to contact the Aust embassy can I suggest you email them. If you phone it is at a premium rate (£1/min I think) and costly and a bit of a treack if you go there in person.

Emails are usually answered pretty fast. Sorry I don't know the address but it would beon their website which also may have more info to help you.

I don't think you can get it as it was not a parent who was Australian. I may be wrong though. Have a look here.
