What's the beach like at Sidmouth? Or Exmouth?

Looking at Sidmouth or Exmouth for a week in July - anyone know what the beaches are like?

Sidmouth - pebbly with sandy patches towards the end. Lots of old granny shops. Quaint.

Exmouth - sandy and much more child friendly. Lots of grockely things nearby. Fun.
