Staunton is good. I used to be a member. You could also do seaside - Bosham / West Wittering / or historic dockyard in Portsmouth.

Staunton is a lovely day out.

Take a huge picnic and the DC will be amused in the playarea while you eat, and then you can go over the road to the walk around the lake.

Look out for the underground bunker type hole where my DS found a pair of pants and then took great pleasure in trying to fling them at me from the end of a stick Grim little boy!!

Bosham also a nice area, but wouldn't fill a day imo.

We liked Staunton too. But best of all we like the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum. We are members and spend hours up there. Lots of really old houses to explore and masses to look at, loads of space to run around, farm animals to see, there are often activities going on in the houses, too. A big working mill and a duck pond. It's about 5 miles north of Chichester, so a little out of your way, but not much.
