I have been to lanzarote, the location was great, though had major problems with the villa company - extremely poor customer service, so we will never use that company again.

Salema - in a villa just out of the village, it is about an hours drive from the airport and a fishing village. I have also stayed at Luz twice, again just outside the village but in a campsite, though they do do cabins. There are another couple of villages between these two that are really nice
map

It is national park so building is restricted

I like it the other side of Lagos, as it is less populated and not as busy as somewhere nearer the airport.

Another vote for Luz. We have been there 5 times and are going back this summer. Lovely village, lovely restaurants, lovely people, lovely beach. Also some other super small beaches a bit further down the coast towards the cape.

The other nice thing about the Algarve is that the weather is reliable but not too hot especially in the evenings as it tends to be a little windy.

We visited Lazarote once and it was ok but I wasn't that taken with it.

I would vote for Lagos or Luz in Algarve, been four times and it is lovely.

Lanzarote can be quite windy

Lanzarote - longer flight, some beaches are black, but weather is better (never been windy when we've been?), sea is calm and swimmable

Algarve - shorter flight, lovely beaches, shorter summer, atlantic ocean so some big waves....

we've been to lanzarote twice to a lovely hotel with apartments. very easy family holiday. nice restauarants nearby. going to try the algarve in october - hope it will still be warm enough...
