Agree about the food at the zoo. Under no circumstances even consider eating there! If the weather is nice, there are plenty of places to picnic outside. If the weather is bad, go into the aquarium (underground) and there are benches in there (loads) that never get used and the kids can run up and down.

inside stuff at london zoo:

lots of the gorilla stuff
parts of kids zoo
the hummingbird pavilion (loads of bright birds, a waterfall)
the bug house (big)
reptile house (big)
aquarium (big)
komodo dragon
'smelly house' where the elephants used to be, hippos in winter (there yesterday), camels sleep, some birds and some touch toys and buttons and toddler friendly nooks and crannies
'mini-monkeys' - the clore pavilsion has rainforest stuffed full of cute wee beasties and a large night time exhibit in the basement

you can take your picnic into the cafe and top up with hot drinks/chips etc. we usually do.

can't recommend enough, tbh. we go loads in winter. as you can probably tell by my insane level of knowledge of it.

kids under 3 are free. also, if you join as members you get your entry fee back - being a member also gives you whipsnade entry and parking free. so if you think you might go a few times in a year, that's worth it.
