What to feed 9 month old DS in Malaysia

hi, we're going to malaysia for 2 weeks and i'm not sure what to do about food for DS. should i take enough jar food for him for the whole time, or buy food when I'm there? What types of local food would it be safe to give him e.g. fresh fruit, rice, vegetables - would they be ok? He is breastfed although will take a bottle if needed, but is it safer/better to just stick with bfing while we're there.

I'm also concerned about him getting dehydrated as he doesn't drink much. we only give him water at the moment in a beaker, but is there any other way to encourage him to drink?

if he is still being breastfed he will have the liquids he needs, I only started giving water with solids as supplementary. There should be lots of other food you can give there - fruits with skins like banana's, oranges, mango etc are fine, fresh cooked rice, veges, plain noodles, etc will be ok. and biscuits, crackers, wafers would be fine too.

Have a lovely time, i would love to take my kids to Malaysia.

My friend was brought up in Malaysia and I think she said she ate a lot of papayas and rice

If it were me, I would take a box of good porrige and a few jars and between those bits, milk and the things you are happy giving him I think you will be fine

To lighten weight of jars take the little pots of plums food instead.

You should find baby rice/porridge very easily, but jar food may not be available outside of large cities (Penang, KL, etc.).

He will want more breastfeeding than normal.

Hi, just got back from Malaysia last night with my 4 kids. Although numbers 1,2 & 3 are not on baby food and number 4 is only 2 months therefore not yet on solids I did notice in several supermarkets in KL a wide variety of jars of baby food so if you are in KL or another big city you should be ok. We spent a few days in Langkawi and didn't notice any big supermarkets there so if you are going up to that region I'd make sure you have enough jars/packet baby food for your stay.

As others have said, as b/f him he should have enough fluids with just the occasional top up of water. I gave my DD a lot of the lovely fruit juices we got there but watered them down a bit for her.
Lots of nice fruits available, just make sure you wash them properly.

Make sure you take lots of mozzie spray though or buy a good one when you get there as my poor DD aged 2 1/2 got very badly bitten in Langkowi but if you are in KL or a main city you are probably ok. Have a fab holiday

I don't know a lot about Malasia, but I would assume there are probably some 9-month-olds actually living there. They probably have food suitable.

DuffyFluckling: they do, but it is generally dried, and Western parents may well prefer jar food. Also many children are brought up on diluted rice (which is a staple food, obviously), and again this might not be to taste for Western parents.
