We don't 'do' flying . We often travel (car) to France, last year Normandy and year before St Tropez and The Var in Provence. Anyone got any ideas for a holiday thats not too far to travel, throw some ideas at me please! Could do France again, we love it there but wondering about other options that are child-friendly. As long as it doesn't involve days of driving to get there, accommodation is comfortable and the weather is slightly warmer than here in sunny Kent (where its currently raining!) then we'll be delighted!

Some friends of mine (with kids aged 6 and 3)took the ferry to Santandar and had an amazing time. Enormous beaches with hardly anyone else there, the Picos mountains only a short distance away BUT it would be quite a drive for you to get the the ferry (Portsmouth or Plymouth)and the ferry ride is quite long which may be a problem with little children.

Back in France, the south Brittany coast is lovely, large and very clean beaches, warm sea, also I've heard the Vendee is good, again it has lovely beaches with a Provencal climate. Good Luck!

Was going to suggest Santander. Also, you have to be lucky with the weather, but Denmark via the Harwich-Esbjerg ferry is fabulous for kids - they are so well provided for, lots of beaches, parks etc. and you do have Legoland as well.

You can do motorrail to Italy as well, I think, though I've never done it. You could also get a crossing to Hoek van Holland and pootle about in that area.

Thanks so much both of you. Santander is looking like it might be for us! The ferry ride is long, but looks like quite a lovely ferry (2 cinemas and soft play!) and I think sleep at sea could be fun for all of us! I'm sure the kids will love it. Just need to hunt for a suitable casa. Very excited! Thank you!
