speedo's only! - french campsite rules... is this normal?

i have just booked a campsite in france for this years holiday. I was reading the campsite rules last night and it states that swimming shorts are strictly forbidden in the pool. Only swimming trunks are allowed....in fact there is even a picture of a pair of shorts with a big red cross over them....is this slightly bizarre?? I can't think of any real reason for this.
DH is a bit on the lanky side....the thought of him in speedo's is well, not pretty, besides, he will flatly refuse to wear anything like that anyway.

The fact that one of the photos on the website shows two blokes sporting freddie mercury-esque 'taches with their arms round each other in the pool is really worrying DH now....

This is why I can't go swimming in France. DH happily wears tight short things to go swimming (he's a triathlete and you can't train in baggy things). I always wear board shorts and a tankini top. I do no and will not ever wear bikinis or one piece swimming costumes.

DH has, oddly, had more problems with wearing his speedos here (complaints from other people) than he has worries over swimming on the continent.

My understanding is that it is because board short type shorts can be worn as normal clothes, so people could wear them out on the street, get them dirty and then jump straight into the pool and dirty it up.

DP has some tight black trunks that can only be described as hotpants for places where his preferred board shorts are not acceptable.

We get off lightly with swimming pool etiquette in the UK. If you go anywhere in Scandinavia, you have to have a full soapy naked shower before entering the pool. There are posters with instructions on how to shower correctly and sometimes attendants monitoring procedures to ensure that they are followed.
