speedo's only! - french campsite rules... is this normal?

mabel1973 · 23/03/2009 15:49

i have just booked a campsite in france for this years holiday. I was reading the campsite rules last night and it states that swimming shorts are strictly forbidden in the pool. Only swimming trunks are allowed....in fact there is even a picture of a pair of shorts with a big red cross over them....is this slightly bizarre?? I can't think of any real reason for this.
DH is a bit on the lanky side....the thought of him in speedo's is well, not pretty, besides, he will flatly refuse to wear anything like that anyway.

The fact that one of the photos on the website shows two blokes sporting freddie mercury-esque 'taches with their arms round each other in the pool is really worrying DH now....

Probably

BoffinMum · 23/03/2009 19:01

My only regret is there wasn't a leopardskin version ...

Milliways · 23/03/2009 19:04

YOu can buy the tight fitting swim/speedo shorts very cheaply in most french supermarkets. As everyone wears them they soon get over the embarrasement.

We were told it is because the shorts could have been worn on the beach and sand etc gets brought into the pool on them. No rules on the girls coming straight from beach to pool in bikinis though!

Portofino · 23/03/2009 19:07

Very very common abroad. My dh has invested in a particularly not sexy pair of tight shorts which meet the rules. He has taken this on the chin though.

wobbegong · 23/03/2009 20:05

Very common, as everyone says.

My DH on honeymoon in France was ordered out of his swim shorts by the lifeguard and, when he protested a bit, given a pair of nuthugging speedos from the lost property box. They were two sizes too small and he nearly fell out on the flume.

Be warned!!!

Portofino · 23/03/2009 20:23

wobbegong ! Did you laugh? If not, I bet you were dying to.....I would have! I always tell my DH how good he looks in his .

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/03/2009 20:26

My DH had to hire a pair from the public pool in Chamonix before he was allowed in [barf emoticon!]

Portofino · 23/03/2009 20:30

"Hire" a pair? OMG! Women just would so NOT do that! Well I wouldn't anyway. I know there is nothing wrong with other's ladybits, but still!!!!

Haylstones · 23/03/2009 20:30

We had this issue a few years ago.
I believed it was to stop little curly friends from clogging up the filters....

Surfermum · 23/03/2009 20:35

I don't get the fuss. I think shorts are a really odd thing to wear to swim in. I used to find a man who wore shorts to swim in a turn off!! But I was a competitive swimmer so I guess it's just what I'm used to.

wobbegong · 23/03/2009 20:36

I didn't laugh Portofino because I didn't recognise him, because I was looking for a man in black baggy shorts and not one in red nuthuggers!! I can't see very well without my glasses in swimming pools!!

And you are so right, I wouldn't have worn a communal swimsuit meself. Bleurgh.

Leslaki · 23/03/2009 22:28

Actually I've been camping in france for years n years and XH never wore speedos and was never asked to even thos th brochure advertised the horror stories of British men needing to!!! Buy a chea pair, then he can wear his shorts and only change into the monstrosity if he REALLY has to!

BoffinMum · 24/03/2009 06:28

I think we should have a campaign to bring nuthuggers back. If we are forced to defoliate ourselves, fret about our thighs and wear clingy one-pieces and bikinis in order to look good, then the men should not be let off the hook by wearing baggy, overly modest swimwear. There should be gender equality in apparel.

bigTillyMint · 24/03/2009 06:53

wobbegong, I think my DH had to hire the same pair - were they a bit see-thru too?

He now owns a pair of black speedos in his size

geordieminx · 24/03/2009 09:54

how about something like this

mabel1973 · 24/03/2009 09:54

Going back to my original OP, does this mean the kids have to wear them as well?

Could probably squeeze DS2 into an old floaties swim nappy...

mabel1973 · 24/03/2009 09:56

OMG - I wish DH wouldn't pose for pictures in his thong

bigTillyMint · 24/03/2009 12:22

Yes, boys have to wear them too!

You can get cheap swimming trunks in most big supermarkets here - DS's cost about £2!

TrillianAstra · 24/03/2009 12:29

It's true, and it is often enforced, so beware!

If you get some like this it's not so bad, but maybe DH will want to go to the gym a bit beforehand as that's a lot to live up to!

BoffinMum · 25/03/2009 06:16

I have told DH about this thread and he is in denial and doesn't believe anyone would part men from their surfer shorts, forcing them into nano speedos with testicles flapping out the sides!

mumoverseas · 25/03/2009 09:24

oh dear god, my blood pressure has just shot up on reading this. We've booked to go to centreparcs near paris this summer and I'm thinking we might have to cancel now. I'm not sure who would be more outraged at this rule, DS who will be 16 or DH who it will be virtually impossible to get speedos to fit. I imagine hell will freeze over before either of them wear them.

ingles2 · 25/03/2009 09:31

we had no idea about this before going to France, but dh and the boys were hoiked out of the pool pretty bloody quickly.
DH sulked for quite a few hours about it and then went round in his shorts and would whip them of before getting into the pool.
Not a happy man....
Me, on the other hand, hysterical with laughter

FlappyTheBat · 25/03/2009 09:38

This has just put me off going camping in France, have previously told dh that he is not allowed to wear speedos as I can't stand them.

Trying hard to get image of Peter Stringfellow out of my head but it's not working.

Surfermum · 25/03/2009 12:43

Don't think Peter Stringfellow .... think Ian Thorpe

ingles2 · 25/03/2009 12:44

phwoar!
nope... dh definitely didn't look like that!
