I know..Im sorry.. there are loads of threads around. Just wondered if anyone has visited the Pointe St Gilles Campsite and when you went, what you thought? If anyone has 3 children, how you did the timings. ours will be 15mths, 4 and 7. DH is refusing to consider an overnight ferry or long ferry to Roscoff or St Malo. Says he wouldnt fit in a bunk, would rather be in car for hours and hours!! Just cant get my head round timings - best time to get a ferry and how long 450 miles or so would take once on French soil. Did you stop over?

We didn't go to that campsite but went to the area.

We did the 7.30 am sailing from Poole to Cherbourg. By 5.30 pm we were in the swimming pool on the site. I think it was about a 5 hour drive, maybe a bit less. The roads were great and really easy to drive and navigate.

It is a more expensive crossing, but as we live only 10 minutes from the ferry terminal it makes sense for us.

Whereabouts are you?

We've done the overnight Poole-Cherbourg several times and the cabins are fine, sizewise - they will let you book a cabin for four and don't count the under-fours (I usually co-sleep with DD).

Have a look at the viamichelin website for routes, timings and tolls.

Point St Gilles is nice, has a small beach, but the main Benodet beach is around the corner. Search the archives for 'Benodet' because it has been mentioned in several threads.

Thanks surfer mum and chippyminton. Ive just realised that i must have pressed post button twice as thread appears twice. Whoops. We're on outskirts of london south east so poole would be quite a way for us as would plymouth. Portsmouth is a possibility. will look at the archives thanks for suggestion re Benodot.

i was at work earlier but the viamichelin link
If you are SE London the tunnel/ferry would probably be easier than taking a longer crossing.
