Family hols in Majorca/Menorca

We are looking to go away for a week during the school summer holidays, flying from Bournemouth or Southampton. We would like a quiet location (Magaluf would be our idea of hell!!) within easy walking distance of a lovely sandy beach and some inexpensive restaurants........ just a laid-back family holiday, really. If any of you could recommend somewhere (probably self-catering although I'd love to stay in a hotel!) we'd be so grateful. Many thanks.

alcudia is lovely, fab beaches, nice restaurants and child friendly.

We stayed at the alcudia pins last May and stayed self catering.
It is a large hotel a little out of alcudia (bus ride) but had fab pools, right on beach, fab cheesy entertainment every night and good shops/restaurants on site.
DD was 2.5 and had a great time
Would highly recommend it

Cala Galdana in Menorca is lovely.

We went to Majorca for first time last year and stayed in Puerto Pollensa.

Absolutley loved it and cant wait to return. Lovely shallow warm waters for kiddies. It generally will not be cheap to eat out in Europe this summer, so if you stay self catering you can eat in some days.

I recommend you look up puertopollensa.com. There is a section on private apts to rent, then you can get your flights separately. If you prefer a package then check out Thomson etc.

We stayed in Puerto Pollensa last year and rented a lovely villa through Villa Plus, great service, sheets and towels were changed 3 times in the week and we had our own private pool.

Another vote for Puerto Pollensa here. We prefer it to Alcudia which is a bit more brash, though the old town there is lovely.

I'll second Cala Galdana in Menorca, only 9 weeks till I go

Baconsarnie · 20/03/2009 14:50

I second Puerto Pollensa! It's lovely. In fact, am just trying to find a baby-friendly apartment/villa there for September.

Tillyscoutsmum · 20/03/2009 14:54

We stayed in Puerto Pollensa and loved it. Cala D'or is lovely as well - we stayed just outside in Cala Serena - very small with a little sandy cove and a few restaurants but only a short walk to the main centre of Cala D'or (but we only went in twice in the fortnight)

We hired this villa It was fabulous

Snowstorm · 23/03/2009 14:52

I'm looking at Puerto Pollensa too ... have found a place with a shared pool which is unheated. Is an unheated pool in Majorca still a warm pool??!

LilRedWG · 23/03/2009 14:54

Puerto Pollensa is lovely.

willali · 23/03/2009 15:00

Another vote for Puerto Pollensa (Alcudia a bit "kis me quick hat" for us IYSWIM) Try James Villas - exceptional service

Hersetta · 23/03/2009 15:59

Snow - I would say it would be a lovely and warm pool in late june, july and august. before and after that time it could be distinctly chilly - certainly for adults (the kids don't seem to notice!).

sarahpea · 24/03/2009 11:09

Sarahpea, We stay at the Galdana Gardens, very close to the beach and only a small complex. Cala Galdana is a lovely place and would be ideal for a 2yr old.

jellybeans · 04/04/2009 11:01

Cala Galdana in Menorca is really nice but can get very busy on the beach, Santo Tomas is nice with a huge beach, quiet but lots of cafes and kids play areas.

dietqueen · 05/04/2009 17:53

Safari Apts in Sa Coma Majorca. Excellent went last year. 4 lovely on site restuarants, play park and their own water/spalsh park (payable but approx £8 for the whole dsy includes all drinks, all food throughout the day). Would def recommend
