Some questions about Sardinia in high season

Really fancy the idea of a family holiday here BUT we'd only be able to go in the school hols, and I've read that it gets pretty mad with all the Italians taking their August breaks here too. Is it still worth considering? or does anyone have any alternative suggestions:
2 dcs (7 and 3); would prefer non-resort non-package; somewhere near beaches but with tavernas nearby. Thanks

Was in Cagliari late last August and it was utterly unbearable out of the shade.

I went last august (was hot but not unbearable but we were on the north coast around Baia) and it wasn't mad with Italians taking their breaks,it was pretty quiet tbh. Most hotels have saltwater pools and there are plenty of fab beaches, the sea is really warm then.

We've just booked the last week of August again and are heading for Palau.

We used this company, they have lots of choice.

We're going to the South in a few weeks for summer half term. Have scoured the usual self catering websites (we normally opt for the luxury self catering option), I'm torn because for the first time ever, it's going to be more expensive than a 2 bedroom family suite HB at a relatively upmarket resort. The euro/sterling exchange rate is actually making a resort holiday attractive (shudders a little). I'm on the verge of giving up on the search of a fab villa with private pool which is less expensive than the resort option. I guess that's Sardinia for you. I would personally avoid Sardinia in August due to the heat and the crowds.
