Anyone fly London to Chicago often?

We would love to visit BIL and his family in Chicago this summer but flights so expensive. As we don't have to worry about accommodation so don't need to book everything up at this stage has anyone noticed if prices to business destinations in the US go down during the summer - could we bag a last minute bargain? Can't imagine there are too many other people wanting to holiday in Illinois.

In my experience, you're better off booking early, at least 2-3 months in advance. The prices for June aren't too bad, but they get worse for July/August. Honestly don't think you'll find better by waiting. I use kayak.co.uk to set up fare alerts, quite helpful.

and the whole Chicago area is lovely during the summer! Beaches, boating, BBQs etc....

Thanks - doesn't look as if we will be going then...

Have a look at BA's website.

They will charge around £2399.00 for 2 adults and 1 child to fly to and from Chicago 1st - 15th July in World traveller (economy) class. The fare seems to remain about the same in that month; it increases by a small amount each way for each pax (more like £20 each, not in the hundreds) in August.

Way too much for us Attila but thank you for looking.

Virgin Atlantic has it for £1506 for 2 adults 1 child....is that more in your price range? Personally I never go if it's more than £400 per adult, but if you have kids in school that can be difficult.

mosschops30 · 13/03/2009 15:44

Booking early in the travel industry is approx 11 months before you want to travel (for long haul flights).
You may have left it late to get a 'cheap' flight sorry

mosschops30 · 13/03/2009 15:48

If you dont mind one stop then cheapeast is £1,469 for all of you

Or £1502 direct

Thats on ebookers.com, the non stop is with BA

Tip: never book direct with airline, travel companies buy large amounts of seats at cheaper prices from airlines, therefore you pay less

lalalonglegs · 13/03/2009 15:59

Oh, I didn't know that. Yes, was definitely hoping for something more around £400 mark. Bit of a spontaneous visit but it can wait until next year, I suppose, if nothing comes up (although, by then our baby will be 2yo and we will have to pay for her as well as the other two children...)

CHeapest flights to/ from Chigaco are usually with Air India or Aer Lingus

You can often get good deals with BMI who fly direct and BA/ Virgin sometimes have good deals.

It does NOT get cheaper in the summer as it is full of tourists.

SuperBunny · 15/03/2009 01:03

And try Thomas Cook

sarah76 · 17/03/2009 18:59

SuperBunny, I was also going to recommend Air India, but checked their website and they don't seem to do the Chicago-London route anymore? V. disappointing! I'd flown with them quite a few times. Not sure if this is a temporary thing, but hoping they bring it back.
