We are trying to decide which airline to fly with, where to stop over and what to do about a car seat as we have found out that UK car seats are illegal in Oz...

Anyone been in this situation or able to advise on the whole situation?

Thanks

Just KL or Dubai?. I'd consider Singapore as well in your list of stopovers.

You have quite a choice of carriers; there's Singapore Airlines (who are supposed to be very good all round), BA and Quantas to name but three. BA themselves no longer fly direct into Melbourne, that service ended a few months ago.

Dubai airport is grim. Do not stopover there under any circumstances.

Are you visiting friends/family - they could well help with the car seat issue. If you're hiring a car in Aus they should also assist with lending you a car seat.

Most flights via Dubai also stop in an Asian hub, so you would usually have two stops instead of one?

Dubai airport is always busy no matter what time of the day you go (this is before the extention was completed), KL airport is huge, lovely and less chaotic.

I would recommend Singapore airlines and a stop over in Singapore too.

JAL are fab too and we had a great stopover in Tokyo too.

When travelling with children I have found that the Sth East/Asian airlines are the best. The onflight staff are very helpful. I have done the Lon/Melb flight twice with DD. When she was 5mo and 2.8yo and flew with SA and JAL.

BA/Qantas are not good at all!

You can hire car seats once you are there.

i'd recommend singapore airlines and a stopover in singapore or malaysia airlines and a stopover in kuala lumpur...they're both very good. both cities are child-friendly, with loads to do.

You can easily hire cars seats - we took our then 9month and 27 months olds to Oz for a month two years ago and hired them seats. We flew to Sydney via Hong Kong, but only stopped for 4 hours - we just wanted to get it over and done with! It worked well, and they adjusted to the time diff quicker than we did.
